Why we are phasing out conventional cotton?

Conventional cotton uses 1/3 a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to produce one pound of cotton. Although it is grown on only 3% of the farmland acreage in the US, it uses 23% of the chemical pesticides and fertilizers on the crop. The waste and run-off from this process pollutes our soil, groundwater and air. The continued farming of conventional cotton puts our children and our future at risk. Pesticide poisoning unintentionally causes over 20,000 deaths a year and 3 million near fatal poisonings a year on Earth. Conventional cotton is processed with chlorine bleach, which creates dioxins, which are extremely toxic to our environment. Wildlife is greatly affected from the by-products and run off caused by cotton production, disrupting their normal patterns of life and destroying natural ecosystems. Most
cotton pesticides are broad-spectrum organophosphates, which
were developed as toxic nerve agents for use in World War II.
Do we want to continue destroying the environment when there
are viable alternatives?

Each year Be Good Family has made an effort to have a greater percentage of its offerings come from the more environmentally responsible types of fabrics, including hemp and organic cotton. We have been slowly phasing out conventional cotton and by 2006, we plan to have all the clothing we offer be from either organic cotton or hemp origins. We have made a huge effort to help support the proliferation of organic fabrics and foods. We ask that all of you at least buy one organic cotton or one hemp article of clothing every six months. If everyone would adhere to this, we would eliminate several thousand tons of chemical fertilizers a year that are used to grow this unsustainable cotton. Whether you are acquiring it from Be Good Family or somewhere else, you will be helping to support a viably sustainable way of restoring the earth to its full potential.

	HOW TO ORDER After you peruse the site and find something you might want to order, let us know approximately what size you desire. We have an expansive inventory with many style, size and color options, too many to list on the site. Send us an e-mail introducing yourself and let us know what design, style and size you would be interested in. We will e-mail you back with the availability in each design you request and the colors available in your particular size. All orders are shipped by US Priority Mail, unless other shipping arrangements are made for your order.
